Hibiscus coccineus — Red Texas Star Hibiscus

Hibiscus coccineus, commonly known as the Red Texas Star Hibiscus, is a hardy perennial hibiscus that combines a tropical appearance with excellent cold tolerance. Native to the southeastern United States, this striking species produces tall upright stems that can reach 6 to 9 feet in height during the growing season. Despite its lush, tropical look, the plant is quite hardy and can survive USDA Zone 6 winters, returning each spring after dying back to the ground in colder climates.

The foliage is bright green and deeply divided, resembling the narrow, finger-like leaves of a Japanese maple. This delicate foliage gives the plant a refined texture that contrasts beautifully with its tall stems, which are often pink to reddish in color, adding additional ornamental interest even before the flowers appear.

During the warm months, the plant produces spectacular star-shaped red flowers that can range from 6 to 12 inches across.
