Description
Ficus ‘Chicago Hardy’ is one of the hardiest edible figs available. Ficus Chicago Hardy, can produce large segmented tropical looking foliage, eatable fruit, grows very quickly and survives harsh cold winters. Its stems can tolerate temperatures as low as 10°F, while the roots can withstand freezing conditions down to -20°F. This makes it suitable for growing in Zone 6 and warmer climates, or in Zone 5 if planted in a protected microclimate and given heavy mulch during dormancy. Any dieback in the stems will resprout in spring, with fruit growing on the new wood. It can also be grown in a pot and moved indoors or kept in a cool garage during the winter. The plant has large, leathery leaves with a cordate base and 3 to 5 lobes. The medium-sized fruit features light brown to deep purple skin and sweet, pink flesh, ripening in late summer to early fall. It typically grows 10 to 15 feet tall and 9 to 12 feet wide, although in colder climates, it may remain only 3 to 4 feet tall if it dies back. This fig is also known by the name ‘Bensonhurst Purple.’
