Colocasia ‘Jurassic Jellyfish’ is one of the most unusual elephant ear hybrids we’ve ever developed here at Brian’s Botanicals. This dramatic plant traces its lineage back to the same breeding work that produced favorites like Colocasia ‘Pharaoh’s Mask’, but it sits on the far end of the spectrum—bigger, bolder, and unmistakably unique.
First selected during our breeding work in 2016, this hybrid quickly stood out in the trial fields. In rich soil and part shade, it grew an impressive 6–7 feet tall in a single season. Thick dark purple petioles support enormous leaves that can reach 3 feet long and nearly 2 feet wide.
What truly makes this plant special is its dramatic form. Instead of holding its leaves upright like many elephant ears, ‘Jurassic Jellyfish’ produces huge leaves that cascade downward in an exaggerated droop, creating one of the most unusual silhouettes of any Colocasia we’ve grown.
The foliage is a striking blue-green with raised purple veins that stand boldly above the leaf surface. The leaves have a slightly puckered, matte texture that adds depth and character. When fully grown, the plant has an almost prehistoric presence, looking like something that belongs in a Jurassic swamp.
During early trials, reactions to this plant were strongly divided. Some thought it was too big, too thirsty, or even a little “scary.” Others—especially serious plant collectors—were instantly captivated. Those collectors quickly realized that if you love elephant ears, you love them big, bold, and unforgettable.
