Description
Colocasia ‘Heart of the Jungle’ is a distinctive and powerful Colocasia selection originally received as an unidentified species (Colocasia sp.) from botanist Tom Croat. This plant immediately stood out for its bold foliage, deep coloration, and exceptional vigor, making it a valuable addition to breeding and evaluation programs.
The foliage is large and dramatic, with dark green leaves that carry a subtle bluish cast and a slight velvety texture. Leaves can reach nearly 3 feet in length and approximately 2 feet in width, creating a strong tropical presence. Petioles are thick and upright, displaying rich dark maroon coloration that provides striking contrast against the foliage.
Under typical cultivation, Colocasia ‘Heart of the Jungle’ reaches a mature height of around 5 feet, though plants can grow as tall as 7 feet under optimal conditions. It performs equally well grown in standing water or traditional soil culture and produces runners as it matures, allowing it to spread and form impressive clumps.
One of the most remarkable characteristics of this selection is its inflorescence size. While most Colocasia produce flowers measuring approximately 8–12 inches, ‘Heart of the Jungle’ regularly develops narrow inflorescences reaching 24 inches or more, setting it apart as an exceptional and unusual specimen within the genus.
Plants are sold in 4-inch pots.
