Description
Cyathea cooperi ‘Brentwood’ (Australian Tree Fern) is a vigorous cultivar of C. cooperi, originally selected by Fred and Helen Woodley, fern growers from the Los Angeles area, in the 1970s. While it was once thought to be a hybrid, it is now classified as a robust form of the Australian Tree Fern. Like the species, ‘Brentwood’ is a fast-growing tree fern with light-green fronds. It thrives in bright shade but can tolerate full sun along the coast. Regular irrigation is essential, but it’s important to water the trunk and surrounding soil while avoiding the crown to prevent diseases like Rhizoctonia and Tip Blight (Phyllosticta). Under ideal conditions, this fern can grow several feet per year, reaching heights of up to 20 feet. It is hardy to about 20-25°F. Compared to the typical Cyathea cooperi, ‘Brentwood’ tends to grow faster, has a thicker trunk, and develops a fuller head of leaves. The trunk scales are notably more coppery in color, and there’s speculation that this cultivar may be more resistant to Rhizoctonia than the species.
Plants sold in 4 inch pots.
