I have lumped ferns and other primitive and prehistoric plants here. Ferns are a huge family and they can grow in a number of different environments from shade to sun and dry to bog like conditions. Most in this group do not produce flowers but usually spores. They are mainly grown for their unusual but interesting foliage. Other plants commonly associated with the ferns are horses tail or (Equisetum) a reed to almost bamboo looking plant ranging in sizes from a few inches to 8 feet.
