Save the PLANTS! Last night was a rocky one. The overnight low was forecasted to be 8 degrees, and that means lots of outside time for Brian, especially at the nursery. The plan was for him to leave the farm at midnight and get home around 4 a.m. after he put wood on the boiler […]
One of the biggest (and smallest!) changes in our lives this year has been the birth of our son, Phoenix! He surprised us by arriving two weeks early, but still weighed a healthy 8 pounds. I like to joke that he’s our favorite hybrid we’ve ever made. I kept my pregnancy and due date a […]
It’s always good to look back and see how things have changed over the years—how dreams turn into projects, and projects eventually become part of our everyday reality. So much can happen in just one year, both big and small, that it’s easy to forget things weren’t always the way they are today. For example, […]
Today marks Brian’s and my 20th anniversary of when we started dating. We had been spending a lot of time together and decided to take a trip to Florida. To be honest, I think that was the first—and last—trip I ever let Mr. Williams plan. It was an adventure from start to finish; I’m pretty […]
What a beautiful week we’re having! The highs are in the mid-80s and the lows are in the upper 60s—can it just stay like this all year long? With temperatures like these, the garden calls for a long evening stroll. Here on the farm, that means lightning bugs dancing among the cannas while frogs sing their […]
Who else is ready for this heat wave to be over? This oppressive heat has made it tough to get anything done around the farm or at the nursery. But if there’s one silver lining, it’s that it’s the perfect time to break out the homemade ice cream. The sound of that old-fashioned whirling machine was […]
This weekend, after I finished with the boxes, I was able to help fill up the tables I was telling you about. They’re turning out to be one of my favorite new things we’ve done this year. The old tables lasted us a good 15 years, so I’m hoping these will be around just as […]
We got a special delivery at the nursery and the farm this week— a whole semi-load of potting soil! This usually isn’t too much of an adventure, even though it is very exciting for me. This year was a little different; we had half of the potting soil delivered to the nursery as usual and half delivered to the farm. This was a first—not the first time having a semi at the farm, but the first time the dirt came to us.
Inevitably, this time of year we start a massive clean-up of all the plant displays and greenhouses. No matter how much you clean throughout the spring, there are always messes in the greenhouses that get overlooked. Each year, we pick a greenhouse and clean it out completely, which is a feat in itself. This gives us a chance to look at the greenhouse with fresh eyes and to fix any problems. This year, we have one side of our “twin” greenhouse already down to the bare table. Now we will be able to clean under and behind everything!
The weather has been awesome this week! We have been in our hybrid field all week fertilizing and pulling weeds. Pulling weeds may be a chore, but it is a great way to get up close and personal with the new hybrids. Moving all the hybrids out of the greenhouses at the farm freed up a lot of space, which needed to be cleaned up and organized.
This year has been a race against time, and I feel like I have been slowly losing that battle. Last week, I was finally able to catch a breath, and as I walked around the nursery, I saw plants we have propagated or grown out not listed for sale. It can be frustrating at times. […]
This spring has been one of the busiest and, not to mention, wettest I have seen in years. It helps to use it as my main excuse for being so behind on planting my gardens and display beds. The rain has been great for the plants that are out in the ground, but also for […]
Well, this spring has been a rollercoaster of weather events and work. Finally, I can focus a bit more on my display beds and propagating more odd plants. We have listed some of the hardy hibiscus with dark foliage. This group has now become a staple for hardy tropical landscapes here in Kentucky. I normally use […]
We’ve been working on new greenhouses at our farm! Well the greenhouse is up but now it’s time to fill it! We needed a cheap way to make “tables” till we can buy some really nice ones. Our solution was crates from good old Facebook Marketplaces. We’ve used these in the past to lift the […]
Check out our NEW hybrid Colocasia Redemption PPAF! Colocasia Redemption ppaf is one of the most amazing hybrids I have been able to produce. Using Colocasia black ripple and hybrids of Col. nancyana and after 12 years of crossbreeding Colocasias I was able to produce a truly amazing looking hybrid that far exceeded my expectations. […]
