Is anyone else tired of hearing about the arctic weather we’re having? I sure am. Brian has been listening to every weather person he can find, trying to get a heads-up on what’s coming, for the past two weeks. Instead of dwelling on the weather, let’s go back to October, when we were building the greenhouse and the days were hot and dry.

At this point in the Greenhouse 3 build, it was time for my least favorite part of any project: the odds and ends. We spent the next week installing supports, wiggle wire track, and the gutters. While it might have been my least favorite part of the build, it turned out to be one of my favorite times working on the project. As new parents who are always working, there isn’t much time left for just Brian and me. With Phoenix at his Grammy’s and it being just the two of us on the job site, it felt a little like a date — taking things slower, stopping to talk about the future, and lingering a bit longer over lunch.

We traveled all around the greenhouse together in the small basket on the front of the boom lift, going up and down what felt like a million times while installing wiggle wire track. Both the front and back hoops, around every fan and shutter, and around the doors all had to be outlined with track. This is what “seals” the greenhouse and keeps the plastic firmly secured around both ends.

After that, we installed the long outside gutter, which is what Greenhouse 4 will attach to in the future. It was a little comical watching us toss those 12-foot sections of gutter up onto their supports. Only a couple were dropped, but don’t worry — they weren’t harmed.

After one last look at the greenhouse, and with the rental time on our machine coming to an end, it was finally time to install the two massive sheets of plastic and call the greenhouse finished.
