One of the biggest (and smallest!) changes in our lives this year has been the birth of our son, Phoenix! He surprised us by arriving two weeks early, but still weighed a healthy 8 pounds. I like to joke that he’s our favorite hybrid we’ve ever made.
I kept my pregnancy and due date a secret for most of the year, hiding out in the greenhouse packing boxes next to the swamp cooler. Since most people don’t wander into the hot greenhouse, I was left to my own devices. To make it all work, I had to lighten my load and let go of some responsibilities—which was difficult for me, but necessary. I focused on two main goals: getting orders out on time and keeping the website running smoothly. It paid off, and I was even able to work right up until the day I went into the hospital—something I’d hoped to do.
Now, life looks a little different as we figure out how to weave this sweet new addition into our daily rhythm. It’s already been an adventure filled with early surprises, late nights, and plenty of baby blowouts. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better (or cuter) baby. Phoenix came home and immediately started sleeping in four-hour stretches at night, which feels like a gift.
Brian’s genes didn’t stand a chance—Phoenix is a carbon copy of me! I suppose he needed two redheads in his life. That said, we may need to invest in sunscreen stock, since Phoenix and I will be going through plenty. Axel has stepped into his role as big brother with ease. He’s constantly checking in on Phoenix and making sure any spilled milk gets cleaned up quickly and efficiently.
Before long, this little guy will be running around the greenhouse with us while we pack and ship orders—and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Congratulations on the birth of baby Phoenix! What a beautiful blessing. We too have a Phoenix in our family. He is the youngest of our 9 grandchildren. He was born on July 11 (also my wife’s birthday) 2020. He and his 3 siblings live in Colorado with mom and dad, while we live in Ohio. We are so happy for you all. God bless you.
Thanks Jim and Joyce! Wow! I can’t believe you have a Phoenix in your family with the same birthday!
