There’s been a heat wave here in Kentucky for the past couple of weeks. Temperatures have stayed in the 90s, with the heat index soaring above 100. The plants are gobbling up the heat and growing tall and strong, while we’ve been ducking inside the shady greenhouses during the afternoons.
Last week, Brian and I had to leave the nursery for a couple of days. I swear, the nursery knows when we’re gone—because as soon as we don’t come in, something vital always seems to break. And last week was no exception: our watering pump system stopped working.
With the kind of heat we’ve been having, it would only take two days for the plants to wilt and start looking awful. We do have a backup system, but it’s not as powerful. It takes three times as long to water the greenhouses—and even then, only about half as well as the main system. It’ll get you by, but not well, and not for long.
Brian has spent the entire week wrestling with the water pump. Of course, the store didn’t have a pump powerful enough, so we had to order one—and that takes time. The wiring also needed to be replaced, and yep, that had to be ordered too. All the while, the backup system was “giving her all she’s got” (yes, a Star Trek reference!), and somehow managed to keep the plants looking good, even if it took three times as long.
But today—finally—all the parts arrived, everything came together, and the stars aligned just right. Brian got the new pump up and running! We soaked down the greenhouses for the entire day, making sure every plant got a good gulp of water.
The backup system may be slow and steady, but the new pump is fast and furious. We’re both very happy to finally go home at a decent hour, knowing that all the watering is done.
