We got a special delivery at the nursery and the farm this week— a whole semi-load of potting soil! This usually isn’t too much of an adventure, even though it is very exciting for me. This year was a little different; we had half of the potting soil delivered to the nursery as usual and half delivered to the farm. This was a first—not the first time having a semi at the farm, but the first time the dirt came to us. Last year, we would bring a pallet to the farm when we ran out, which could be trying at times when you were really busy or ran out in the middle of the day.
Everything was going very well unloading at the farm. We did have to cut the pallets in half because they were too heavy for our tractor to pick up; they weighed upwards of 3 to 4 thousand pounds per pallet, but it was no big deal. Since we had the whole truck, the driver wasn’t in a big hurry. I had assumed that the driver would back out, because that’s what the others did, but no—he decided to turn around. This shouldn’t have been a big deal for most drivers, but this guy was having a tough time with it. Brian tried to give him directions, and that’s when he saw him close his eyes and try to remember which gear was reverse! Though the semi was very nice, I didn’t want it in my front yard, and I’m sure he was ready to go home, too. After a good 45 minutes of moving the semi back and forth and removing some of the plants out of the ground so he could back up into the yard, we had him turned around and ready to leave. The mailbox had a very close call but was spared on his way out. It’s a little comical to look back on now.
Long story short, the dirt is here, and we’ve been planting ever since. The colocasias that we planted first are already 2 feet tall! We are so excited to start shipping everything out!
Happy Spring!
Sarah
