Colocasia gaoligongensis (Black Pearl)

Colocasia gaoligongensis (Black Pearl)

We have grown Colocasia gaoligongensis (Black Pearl) for 6 years in KY and it has shown to be very cold hardy. We have had little to no protection on this plant during the winter and it comes back each spring. We do, however recommend mulching for all hardy tropical plants during cold winters.

Black Pearl gets its name from the dark black center in every leaf. Colocasia Black Pearl looks very similar to Colocasia Illustrius when young. The leaves are green with black markings between the veins. As the plants mature the dark markings fade/ no longer produced. Black Pearl can grow to 6 to 7 feet tall with leaves 2 to 3 feet long. It produces large tubers as well as runners on top and under the ground. The colors on the young leaves, the black center dot, and the fact that this plant is cold hardy to zone 6 or more make it a must have for tropical plant people as well as cold hardy collectors.
