Thalia dealbata
Thalia dealbata also known as alligator flag is a bog to aquatic plant
growing on the banks of creeks and rivers in southern states. The plant
how ever is very hardy to zone 6 or more. The leaves are resemble a
canna leaf large green and spear shaped held on top of tall petioles 3
to 4 feet. The flowers are held high on a tall stem and are small purple
flowers. If looked at closely the flowers look a bit like an orchid.
Another odd fact about the flower is it's amazing way of pollinating. If
an insect enters the flower and touches the stigma it causes the
staminoid or a small arm like structure to release it's tension hitting
the insect with pollen. Sometimes trapping the insect and killing them. Plants will be bare rooted cuttings. |
